Abstract: This essay proposes the practice of an artist’s critic as an answer to the malaise of mediation, considering the very well known dissatisfaction of artists to criticism. The propposal is related to the book O crítico ignorante (The Ignorant Critic), by the author of this paper, Max Bense’s On the Essay and its Prose, The Essay as Form by Theodor Adorno, and specially On the Essence and Form of the Essay: A Letter to Leo Popper, by Georg Lukács, as well as the book by Leila Perrone-Moisés Altas literaturas (High Literatures). It suggests the exchange of epistolary essays among artists, as a way to a critical writing which is lovingly contemporary to the theatre of its time.

Keywords: artist’s critic, ignorant critic, epistolary essay

What would you think if I sang out of tune?
Would you stand up and walk out on me?
Lend me your ears and I’ll sing you a song
And I’ll try not to sing out of key
Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends
I get high with a little help from my friends
Gonna try with a little help from my friends
